USITT approches
Sunday, March 11, 2007
Well, friends . . . in a few days I'll be taking off for Phoenix, Arizona to attend the annual United States Institute for Theatre Technology Conference. It's where tech theatre students go to show off their portfolio and get grad schools interested in them. Basically, the best undergraduate design work ends up there.
My portfolio isn't quite "together" as of yet, so I won't be taking mine. It's okay, because I'll be going to USITT next year and present my portfolio then. This year I'm just going to get a feel for things so I know how to prepare myself for my return trip in 2008. Smart, eh? I thought so. I guess it would be smartest to bring portfolio work now just to start making connections . . . but that's kind of a moot point now. We're leaving in about 48 hours and I have way too much homework and work to do before then to try to throw a respectable portfolio together.
Point being, I'll be gone from Tuesday to Saturday with no internet access . . . no blogging, no emailing. My laptop is too heavy to lug around and overheats to often to take it anywhere without my desktop fan . . . so . . . MacBook, anyone?
Still not sure what I'm going to do after graduation. I still like the idea of UW . . . but who knows where I'll be twenty months and two international trips from now?

There are so many things to love about what you've done, and are doing right now.
1. You changed you picture to one that I took, and it has the green column slime, and I love it!
2. Two international trips!? Yee haw! I'm so jealous I can't even move.
3. I love that you're both getting MacBooks. It's os funny because Aya's computer (four year old iBook) went kaput just last night, so now WE'RE looking at the new MacBooks too. Only, I gotta say, that I was shocked by the power and speed of the iMacs. 250 gigs, anyone?
4. I love that you're thinking about grad school, and I love that you're excited about Seattle. Everytime you mention it, I get a little warm inside.
5. Pheonix is... cool. I guess. Ha! Have fun! I promise to have a heckuvan email waiting for you upon your return.
6. Thanks again for your set design comments.
7. I didn't even notice at first the new White Stripes lyrics. That song rocks. "Acetimenaphin? You see no medicine, aw geerl!"
It might be just too too insane if we both went to UW for Grad school. At the same time. Sort of.
I can't wait for my new computer.
I would go too, but they don't have a good program for me. Sorry. That woulda been just mind-blowing.
1. Isn't that picture great? It cracks me up every time. I love it.
2. I'm gettin' pretty antsy about them. You should be jealous.
3. What kind is Aya thinking about getting? Did you think about what I said regarding suped up MacBooks and MacBook Pros? The screen size is the thing that's worrying me most right now . . . I love lots of space. But I love portability.
4. Seattle makes me happy every time I think about it too. Plans are kind of squashed if you go become a hermit in Alaska for the rest of your life, though. You can be the long-haried hippy woman who brings electirc cars to the AK . . . and who takes daytrips to the Yukon.
5. Pheonix is where I'll be able to get a lot more information about UW. Hopefully I'll be able to meet and talk to some professors . . . or at the very least, some students. I'm excited to see what kind of design work is coming from UW. I wonder what kind of scholarship they'd offer me. Hmmm.
6. Any time. I am more than willing.
7. Rad, huh? I thought you'd like that. The "Well, strip the bark right of the tree and just hand it this way" line is the rockingest ever. It's one of the best on the album. I just love the way he says it. I love you, Jack!
Jess, since when are you looking into UW? I thought it was Yale all the way for you?
A friend of mine just got accepted into the Yale school of drama. We're all pretty proud of him. His name is Slate. Isn't that a cool name? Slate.
It would be pretty trippy if we all went to the same school again.
Do you know how hard it is to get into Yale? I'm still going to apply if I decide to go to grad school, but seeing as I'm already pretty much planning on being in Seattle for a couple of years anyway, it seems like a logical choice to consider.
I guess I don't keep you guys completely up to date on every stray thought that crosses my mind, but yes. Tim and I have been thinking about Seattle for quite some time. I have family there, so it makes sense. And UW has been on my mind for grad school since....well, for the last couple of years, anyway. But all that aside, I'm not even 75% sure that I'll end up in grad school. The end.
Hm, I wonder if Yale has a film program. I've always liked Yale. You know, Ed Norton went there? And George W.
MacBooks: I like portability, but I'm a big fan of that graphics card. I've been looking into it. If I went to film school, I'd want a good graphics card, I think. Yup.
UW: Also no film program. But I could go to U Vancouver and be within shouting distance... practically. Or, like, Stanford. Ha!
Jess, what's your plan if you don't go to grad school? You have ideas of what you want to do as a real job?
No way, the best line of the album is in There's No Home For You Here: "Completely baffled by a backward indication/
that an inspired word will come across your tongue." Ha! Ouch! And then: "It's hard to look you in the face when we are talking/ so it helps to have a mirror in the room." Ooooh, diss!
I have no idea about Yale.
The MacBook Pro also has a fire wire 800 port that the regular old MacBooks don't have. It's a port for transferring really huge files from an external drive . . . like video files or something. If you're doing video, I'd definitely recommend getting the MacBook Pro and upping your harddrive space. I'm thinking the regular old MacBook is gonna be okay for me, because video doesn't really apply in theatre so much. I'm still thinking. I kinda just spent all my money on plane tickets . . . so we'll see when the soonest I can drop $2000 is.
U of Vancouver? Um . . . who's ever heard of that? If you're going to film school, I would try to go somewhere with a name. Well, I dunno . . . if you don't have experience, maybe it would be better and easier to get into a lesser-known grad program. Hmm.
Okay, I didn't say it was the BEST line on the album. I said it was ONE of the best. Man. Cut me some slack. The whole album is the best line on the album. That didn't make any sense, but I'm leaving it in!
Since when is film school an option? You should go to TISH and really tick off Whitney.
As far as a "real job" goes, I know exactly what I want to do, but will have to spend lots of time in a "fake job" making the money to spend on the training. Which is fine, because I've got a perfectly good "fake job" that's going to give me a perfectly good "wicked awesome promotion" in December that will tide me over until Tim's contract is up and we can leave the Grove.
