"Exercise Science"

So, I need to take a PE class next semester. I've narrowed my choices down to tap dance or badminton. I'm pretty equally interested in both, but only have time for one.

I've always been fascinated by tap dance since I started watching MGM Musicals when I was a little girl, and badminton is the only sport I ever truly enjoyed.

What do you think?

Tap dance. Definitely tap dance. Then, when John comes back, you can impress him with your mad tap dancing skillz and he will fall in love with you.

Well, since it's for the fall semester . . . John will be back about two months before I start the class . . . which isn't to say it won't impress him. Hmmm.

I always think that if you can learn a new skill, you should. You can always improve your badminton skillz later, but how many more opportunities will you get to take tap dancing with a bunch of people who aren't six years old?

badminton is the greatest sport. when else will you play badminton? it's not like there are tons of opportunities for it either. i say badminton for the cool factor.

hey, i just noticed that we all have landscapes for our profile pictures now. innnteresting.

Yes, but tap dancing is a NEW skill. And I'm all for NEW skills.

SEE?? I'm torn. TORN I tell you. I want to learn a new skill . . . tap is mad cool . . . but I haven't played badminton in years and I do love it so. This is the only opportunity I'll probably get to do either of these activites.

1. Can you take them both?

2. Doesn't BYU have a badminton club you could join? If not, you should start one. Problem solved.

what if you don't like tap? or what if you suck at it? best to go with the one you know you'll like.

(by the way, that's terrible advice. but it's all i got.)

britt's too hungover to speak legitimately. Yes, you run the risk of not liking or sucking at tap, but you'll never know unless you take the class. That's what she SHOULD have told you. What if you never got involved in theatre because you were scared you'd suck? Where would you be now?

britt, take some advil and stop giving advice until you're sober. I can't believe that "advice" came from you!

Jess, it was absurd advice and that was sort of the point . . .

Anyway, I could take both, but as it is, I'd have to take them back-to-back . . . 8am Tap and 9am Badminton on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Do you think that would be killer? Would I die? I registered for both classes thinking I'd decide between the two and now all the other sections of those classes are full-up. It's a really long shot that I'd get into one of either subject at a different time.

okay, advil taken, water drinken. i'm ready for some real advice.

it seems that tap is the sort of thing where you need to show up every day so you can learn progressively more difficult skills. whereas with badminton, you can probably just show up and play a couple rounds, no? i do that sometimes in our badminton class. it's fun. maybe you should contact the prof and see if you can do that or audit it or something.

is that advice better?

oh, one more thing: 8 am tap dance class!? are you out of your friggin' mind!? like you aren't sleepless enough as it is!

oh, okay, last thing. i just thought of this. heh. okay, ready?

you'd be perfect for seattle, jennifer, because you're so sleepless!

ha! i crack myself up.

I was poking fun. Wasn't really upset.

8:00 makes me rethink it, but 9:00 isn't much better. I try not to take classes before 10:00, personally. Anyway, you can do it. I believe in you.

no comment on my sleepless joke? tough crowd.

I've still got a whole summer to decide between the classes . . . so I'll keep thinking. I WANT to take both. I dunno. And, I signed up for 8am because it was one of the only T/Th sections (I want to avoid classes on Fridays . . . right now I don't have any! Hurrah!) and I wanted to put it at the beginning of the day so I could go to work afterwards. If I have a class early in the morning, I force myself to get up. If I just have work, I inevitably sleep in and stumble into work an hour or two late . . . thus cutting my income almost in half.

Sleepless . . . yes, yes I am. But, I've been on a semi-regular sleeping schedule since arriving here in Logan. I don't have homework or papers or designing or anything to do at night . . . so I just . . . go to bed. I've been on a pretty steady 12am to 8am sleeping pattern for four days now and I'm pretty impressed. Are you impressed? I could do the 8am thing during the school year if I put effort into it . . . it wouldn't be preferable, but I could do it. I'd just have to organize my time extremely well.

britta, you are so funny. Ha ha ha. I love Seattle, and I am perfect for it. And, all I could think to say was, "Hello".

is it really called "excerise science" at byu? that's kind of weird. are there any requirements for pe? at reed you have to take 6 quarters of pe. it's strict. there've been kids who didn't graduate because they didn't get their pe requirements done. but then, you can take bowling or juggling or relaxation meditation classes for your pe if you want.

At Pacific, you have to take one credit of HPER (say "hyper")--Human Performance. You can take snowboarding or skiing or yoga or "fitness walking." I took three semesters of step aerobics. It was awesome.

We also have an Exercise Science department that you can get a degree in. You have to take classes like "Sports Pychology" and "Human Behavior and Motor Control" plus all the regular bio classes. People take it if they want to coach or be a personal trainer, that kind of thing. Or physical therapists. I'd say it's the most common pre-PT major.

Blogger JENNIFER:

"Exercise Science" is the department of PE classes, basically. It's where all the sports classes (badminton, basketball, bowling, cycling, etc.) are and you major in that if you want to do athletic training or physical therapy (they have upper-level classes that aren't just PE courses). Then, there's "Recreation Management and Youth Leadership" which is typical major for the people who want to do outdoorsy stuff. And of course, we have the "Health Science" major for people who want to teach health classes or do public health.

The "Exercise Science" department is filled with 100-level PE classes that everyone has to take at least three semesters of to graduate. There is one called "Flexibility" which I plan on taking in the winter that teaches stretching and power-naps. Right up my alley.

03 May, 2007 19:46
Blogger britta:

they TEACH power naps? how wonderful!

i can't really imagine majoring in excercise science. what's with these extremely narrow majors? how do you get a job with that major? (not htat i should be talking.) but you'd need to know what you want to do forever when you declared your major. now that's freaking scary.

03 May, 2007 22:53
Blogger jessi-ca:

I think any major that's science-based can serve you well if you decide you want to do something else. Often you need a higher-degree anyway, so you just specialize in your new love in grad school. That's what they do here, anyway.

I WANT TO LEARN TO POWER NAP!

04 May, 2007 13:18
Blogger JENNIFER:

Yeah, the majors are pretty narrow, I guess. I always just thought of yours as really broad.

The power nap class is going to be awesome. My friend Keith took it and loved it. One day, while we were all striking the set for Oklahoma! and discussing said class, Mike (the resident lighting designer and teacher) was like, "So, what will you learn about next week? Snack time?"
