I was perusing my iTunes a few days ago and noticed that "So Cruel" had reached my number four spot. I've been listening to it quite a bit this week . . . if you couldn't tell. I remember one time hearing Bono saying that he could never write a pure love song . . . he said he always had to have some sort of twist or despair in it. I wish I had the exact quote. He was talking about "Sweetest Thing" when he said it, I believe, and I've never forgotten it.
I remember the very first time I heard that song. I had just bought
Achtung Baby as end-of-finals-week gift to myself and was listening to several of the songs for the very first time. I'd heard Jessi mention "So Cruel", but had never actually experienced it. It's one of those songs that was love at first sight . . . or, listen rather. Purely astounding. I had an instant love affair with it. I found myself literally breathlessly amazed as I listened to it. I couldn't believe I had been without that song for so many years. I love the sound, the music, the build, the movement, the climax, the feel, the words . . . everything. I remember thinking during that song, "U2. Freaking geniuses." That was a good night. And, I still love that song.
